The Vinnie Experience

I was channel surfing yersterday through the "latin channels" and all of a sudden I see Bernie Williams(Yanks Center Fielder for those who don't keep in touch with baseball [img]wink.gif[/img] )playing an electro/acoustic guitar in what seemed to be a "latin-jazz" gig. Behind him there was a beautiful Gretsch Grey 5 Piece(with bass wood hoops). So I instantly thought GEEZ who could be the monster behind that!....and to my surprise it was nonother than Mr.Colaiuta!

Contrary to most "pop" gigs ive seen Vinnie at, he got TONS and I mean TONS of "shots"(he was like 5 feet within the other players-this took place at the Chicago "House of Blues").

As far as his playing what can u say, just killer, very loose(not strained like the MD Festival)and seemed to be joyful about the spirit of the gig(Luis Conte joined him on percussion which was cool)

Anyways I checked the Verve site and Kenny Aronoff is on the Studio CD....I guess ill have to grab a copy of that [img]biggrin.gif[/img]

I hear the guys got talent, but I wonder if the GPR label fronted the cost of having them big name players do that gig. Bernie's got very big NY Yankee pockets to afford to play with anyone he wants--if they're available. And let's be honest here, just about anybody would sound good with that surrounding lineup. He is coming from the Steinbrenner school of management--get the best talent money can buy around you at all times. He's been hurt most of the year, so I guess he's got some time for this project. It would be interesting to hear.

the lineup was probably put together by the label(I HIGHLY doubt Bernie handpicked them, especially for Vinnie which from the articles ive read on the subject hasn't been mentioned, what a travesty hehe!)

but yeah Mr.Williams ain't no average closet player from what i've read, he's got the theory stuff down and from watching the show he's got a pretty good grasp on the language and dynamics... [img]cool.gif[/img]

I hope a video/DVD is made of this performance. I would have loved to seen this show. It is a shame that there is not many commercial videos of Vinnie around.
